ABOUT

The Vegetable Garden: Identity, Diversity and the Preservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage is a publication created by the University of Barcelona as part of Tilling Roots & Seeds.

This richly illustrated volume brings together scientists, artists, and local communities to explore the vegetable garden as a living space where biodiversity, memory, creativity, and sustainability converge. Through case studies in Vilassar de Mar and Caldes de Montbui, it highlights how traditional botanical knowledge and ecological art practices can foster new cultural and environmental narratives.

Featuring contributions from Teresa Garnatje, Joan Vallès, Eva Figueras, Mar Redondo, and Jo Milne, the book offers an inspiring reflection on the vegetable garden as both a source of food and a tool for collective transformation.

THE VEGETABLE GARDEN

The Vegetable Garden: Identity, Diversity and the Preservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage  is an invitation to reimagine the role of horticulture in our societies — not only as food production but as a powerful cultural and educational tool.

It brings together the voices of scientists, artists, and local communities to explore the vegetable garden not only as an agroecosystem but as a dynamic site of cultural memory, ecological awareness, and creative expression.

Through case studies in Vilassar de Mar’s Hort de la Xinesca and Caldes de Montbui’s Hortes de Baix, the publication examines the vegetable garden as a space of self-sufficiency, multicultural coexistence, biodiversity conservation, and artistic experimentation.

It also highlights how traditional botanical knowledge and contemporary ecological art practices can converge to foster sustainable futures.

Key contributions include:

  • Ethnobotanical insights from researchers at the Institut Botànic de Barcelona (IBB) Teresa Garnatje and Joan Vallès.

  • Artistic explorations by artist Jo Milne using cyanotype as a collaborative eco-archiving technique.

  • Reflections on art-science collaboration by UB Fine Arts professors Eva Figueras and Mar Redondo.

  • A visual and conceptual documentation of the workshops held in community-managed gardens
